The Medici Villa La Quiete

The Villa Medici La Quiete is a villa built in Castello in Florence. The villa is not far from Villa La Petraia and other sumptuous villas such as the Villa Medici Careggi and the Villa Castello.

Villa La Quiete takes its name from a fresco by Giovanni da San Giovanni in 1632 called "La Quiete che domina i venti" (Quietness dominating winds). The villa has, however, much more ancient origins, probably of the fourteenth century when it was a building known as the Palagio of Quarto. The palace belonged to the Orlandini. In 1438 the palace belongs to Niccolò da Tolentino. A few years later it passes to the Medici who give it to the Order of the Knights of St. Stephen. In 1627 the villa was bought by Cristina di Lorena that restructures and builds an elevated corridor linking the villa to a nearby monastery. In 1650 the house passed to Eleonora Ramirez di Montalvo. The noblewoman destined the property to accommodate the congregation of Montalve, an order founded by herself. In 1686 Vittoria della Rovere built a church, the Church of Montalve, following the design by architect Pier Francesco Silvani and with a canvas inside Giuseppe Masini.

In 1754, Maria Luisa de' Medici started to live in the villa, using it as a holiday destination and as a perfect place for retreats. Maria Luisa de' Medici furnished the villa and built an Italian garden with the help of the gardener of the Boboli Gardens, Sebastiano Rapi. For her own garden, she also buyed the close lands. While remaining a typical Renaissance garden with fountains and geometrical flower beds, some Baroque elements make it a nineteenth century garden. To remind the religious value of the place, there is the Cave of the Samaritan woman.

The villa belongs now to the Region of Tuscany and can be visited by appointment.
