The city of Pisa is certainly known worldwide for the Tower of Pisa and the great monumental square in Piazza dei Miracoli. But the city offers so much more with splendid churches and buildings in the historic center and medieval villages and sumptuous villas in the countryside of Pisa. As in the other Tuscan cities, also in the territory of Pisa from the sixteenth century onwards the country houses began to be transformed into magnificent villas to show to guests during parties and events and to be used to spend holidays or relaxing moments. The noble families of Pisa were particularly dedicated to the realization of gardens, especially in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Among the oldest villas we mention Villa Niccolini in Camugliano. The villa was built in 1533 by the Duke Alessandro de’ Medici and still in that century it has a defensive connotation thanks also to its possition. It could dominate the entire Val d’Era and the Val di Cascina. From 1637 the villas passed to the Niccolini family who embellished and furnished it with particular elements. The double staircase of the eighteenth century and the English garden, as well as the 1800-room with a fake loggia, frescoed with landscapes.

Magnificent and innovative, Villa Roncioni in Pugnano changed from country house to villa in 1772. The architect was Giuseppe Gaetano Niccolai. The rooms were nicely frescoed and rich with perspective elements. The real surprise in the property is the silkworm nursery in neo-Gothic style, the first example of a manufacturing building in neo-Gothic style in Italy. The silkworm nursery was the place where in the past they bred silkworms and Villa Roncioni is a perfect example of how the noblemen wanted to have beautiful villas also as their working place and not only as their own residences.
