As mentioned in previous articles, the parks and the gardens that surround the beautiful villas built by the Medici family and the Florentine nobles increased their importance from 1400 onwards. Statues, fountains, grottoes and waterworks in the gardens became mandatory elements in luxury mansions. Important architects were called by the rich nobles to make unique gardens. The garden of the Palazzo Medici Riccardi was adorned with hedges representing animals and ancient bas-reliefs. In the garden of San Marco, always in the historical center of Florence, worked artists such as Botticelli, Lippi, Donatello and Michelangelo. The historical center, according to the historians of the time, had 138 well-landscaped gardens. Among these, of course, the Botanical Garden, the Boboli Gardens and the Roof Garden above the Loggia dei Lanzi.

Now let's see in detail some of the gardens of historic villas. The garden of the Villa di Castello was built in 1540 by one of the most famous architects of the sixteenth century in Florence, Niccolò di Raffaello called Tribolo. The garden of the Villa Pratolino was embellished by another important Florentine artist, Buontalenti, at the request of Francesco I. The work of Buontalenti pleased the Medici who called him also to beautify the gardens of the villas Marignolle, Petraia, Cerreto Guido, Ambrogiana, Artimino, Magic.

The sixteenth century was surely the century that saw the major landscaping of the gardens in Florence. In the seventeenth century, among the greatest artists and landscapers we remind Giulio and Alfonso Parigi, in particular for their contribution to the garden of Villa Poggio Imperiale. In the eighteenth century the Lorena continued the beautification of the gardens of Florence, while in the nineteenth century began the use of the English garden following the projects by Manetti, Inghirami, Digny Cambray, Joseph Frietsch, Cacialli Giuseppe, Giuseppe Del Rosso. The Tuscan Horticultural Society was founded in 1854.
