The Villa I Collazzi
The Villa Collazzi is a historic villa located in the province of Florence. The villa is located in Giogoli near Scandicci on the street called Volterrana. The coat of arms of the villa belongs to the family Dini and is silver with a lush green tree and at the top red with the word Libertas in gold.
Originally the fortress belonged to Buondelmonte but in 1534 the property was purchased by Baccio and Agostino Bini. The two were bankers from the Mugello area and at that time had become very wealthy thanks to their banking activities. Immediately the two transformed the fortress into a villa. The works have been attributed to Michelangelo Buonarroti and the architect was Santi di Tito, but historians today doubt that the two have been partakers of the renovation of the villa. Surely, however, Villa I Collazzi is a splendid example of a villa open to the outside with two side wings that resemble Villa Le Volte in Siena. The open courtyard and the many lodges confirm this idea.
In the eighteenth century the villa was enlarged and embellished by Castelli Medea, the wife of a Bini. The Lady built the double staircase at the entrance of the villa in 1754. In 1593 an important painting was placed in the chapel, which can be accessed from the courtyard. The garden offers terraces with lemons and limes, and in 1853 the Bombicci family planted cypress trees in circle. In 1938, the garden was enriched by a stone pool and the villa was completed and made perfectly symmetrical from the owners, the Marchi family.
The panoramic view from the courtyard, the architectural choices and the improvements made over the centuries make this one of the most beautiful and well preserved villas in Florence.
