Villa Il Pozzino in Florence

Villa Il Pozzino is located in one of the most loved area by the Medici, though in this case, the villa belonged to Florentine nobles and not just the Medici family. The coat of arms of the house is the crest of the Grazzini family: red and gold vertical stripes in the middle and a blue horizontal stripe at the top.

The original building is a large tower that in the fifteenth century belonged to Carnesecchi. In 1576 it was sold to the Campani and in 1586 to the Grazzini. The family Grazzini enlarged and embellished the tower house, transforming it into a villa. At the beginning of the seventeenth century the courtyard walls were frescoed. During the same period Giovan Francesco Grazzini asked the painter Pietro Salvestrini to fresco the loggia of the first floor. He chose to decorate this part of the villa with beautiful geometric patterns in red, blue and green. The painter painted landscapes and scenes of real life as the medieval games loved by the Florentines: the Florentine soccer and horse racing called 'Palio dei cocchi' and 'corsa dei barberi'. Inotre, there are some mythological scenes such as the Parnassus near allegorical figures and some references to the masks of the Commedia dell'Arte.

Another important painter of the time was Giovanni Mannozzi who in 1630 painted the courtyard with images of laundresses and peasants. In these scenes there is a certain irony on the countryside life: the washerwomen are disturbed by the satyrs and the peasants are robbed by gypsies.

In the eighteenth century the family Grazzini called Luigi Ardemollo who came from Milan to Tuscany to paint the great fresco of the gallery on the ground floor of the villa. The pictorial decoration of Ardemollo is known as the Triumph of Alexander the Great. In the nineteenth century the villa was sold repeatedly. The owners were the Bartolini Baldelli, the Mori Ubaldini Alberti, the Lucii and finally Gilli, who made major renovations.
