The Medici Villa Marignolle

The Medici Villa Marignolle is located a few kilometers from the Porta Romana, one of the ancient gates of medieval Florence. The villa is therefore placed in the south of Florence between Galluzzo and Soffiano.

The house was built in the fourteenth century when it belonged to the Sacchetti family. In the mid sixteenth century Francesco I de' Medici confiscated it. In fact, the Sacchetti family was accused of being part of the conspiracy of Pucci in 1560 to kill the father of Francesco I, the Duke Cosimo I. Francesco I de' Medici gave it to his son Don Antonio. Don Antonio was the illegitimate love child between Francesco I and Bianca Cappello. The architect who oversaw the renovation of Villa Marignolle was Bernardo Buontalenti.

From the architectural point of view, the project of Villa Marignolle was a critical step for the architect Buontalenti. As for the Villa Pratolino and Villa La Petraia the main structure is a single block, for Villa Belvedere and Villa Artimino the block gets longer. Between the first and second ones, there is the project of Villa Marignolle. The villa retains the crenellated wall, typical of fortified houses, but the distribution of the halls followed a longitudinal line and there are an arcade and a loggia.

After Don Antonio, the Medici did not consider the villa of particular importance and sold it in 1621 to Piero di Girolamo Capponi. The famous scholar and politician Gino Capponi was buried in the chapel of the villa. Today the remains are in the Basilica of Santa Croce. From the twentieth century onwards, the villa has been owned by several individuals, including the Farinola family, Senator of the Republic Luigi Ridolfi and the antiquarian Bellini. After being auctioned off, the villa is still privately owned.
