The first coats of arms began to be used in the fourteenth century. The oldest coats of arms were very simple with few colors and a few symbols. The enamels used were usually two: the first could be gold , silver or metal and the second blue, red or black. Classic examples of these early coats of arms are those of the Conti Guidi, Capponi, the Azzi and Amidei. Then they were enriched following the town heraldry and symbols of the territorial authorities and factions. The families close to the Ghibellines, and then the empire, for example, enriched their badges with the image of the eagle. Among these, the Gherardesca and Upezzinghi of Pisa, the Inghirami of Volterra and the Malespini of Florence  and some important families of Arezzo as Tarlati, Montedoglio and Barbolani. Other families preferred to use the lion representing both the Swabians and the people's power. Among these, the Ricasoli , the Acciaioli, the Ubertini. The animals were also favored by other major Tuscan noble families such as the Pazzi who used the dolphins, the Martelli with the griffin , the Altoviti with the wolf.

Most of the coats of arms found in Florentine palaces and the historic villas in the province include the presence of various balls. Those who know a bit of history and ancient architecture knows that the coat of arms of the Medici family had several balls that characterized it. Not only the Medici used the balls on their coat of arms: other families were the Federighi, Foraboschi, Cipriani and also the Mansi in Lucca. The coat of arms of the Medici family, as well as balls that could be also seven, eight or nine, was enriched by one of the colored ball of blue with three lilies of France after the authorization of Louis XI and, starting from 1569, the grand-ducal crown .
