In the Middle Ages the gardens were closed and fortified with squared flower bushes and vegetable gardens. In the era Humanism instead the concept of garden changed and, rediscovering the values of the classical world, creating gardens becomes a real art. Both the villa and the garden have to transmit, as written by Leon Battista Alberti, the idea of 'otium', ie a life without actions, a quiet life without problems. Even Boccaccio in his Decameron describes the villa ('Il Palagio') and the garden as a place away from the city where young people can stop and rest, a place to shelter from the plague and isolated from the problems of the city. The allegory of the opposition between town and country, between city palace where to work and villa in the countryside with large garden where to have fun, is perceptible even looking at the works by other major artists such as Ambrogio Lorenzetti or Utens.

Lorenzo the Magnificent and Cosimo I were among the greatest exponents of this new concept of garden for their villas. The garden becomes an art and is decorated with impressive works, fountains, water features and rare plants. Marsilio Ficino wrote his treatises on the therapeutic properties of plants and herbs analyzing those of the garden of the Villa of Careggi in Florence. Botanical studies of Cosimo I took place in the Garden of the Semplici in Florence, built in the sixteenth century. Another important garden of the historic center of Florence is near the Boboli Gardens at Palazzo Pitti. Lucca is no less with noble families, starting from the seventeenth century and throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, beautify their gardens and parks following the trend of various ages, much more open than Florence to European fashions and to the artistic currents of the Mittel Europe.
