The sixteenth century marks the transition from fortified buildings surrounded by gardens to luxurious villas with extensive gardens filled with allegorical figures, waterfalls, fountains and avenues. Looking closely at the architectural choices, however, you can see substantial differences between the villas built in Florence, Siena and Lucca.

The main architect working for the Medici family was certainly Buontalenti who remained close to a single block structure for his villas, following geometric lines and maintaining or building in some of them four towers at the four corners of the building. The Villa of Artimino from 1594, the villa Serravezza from 1565 and also the Villa Ambrogiana in Montelupo Fiorentino of an unknown architect reflect, in some way, this ideal of a fortified villa.

Among the historic mansions of Siena we find a U-shaped buildings with an architectural movement which project the building outward, like wings or outstretched arms. The idea was by Baldassare Peruzzi, who worked for the Chigi family, building the Villa delle Volte in the province of Siena and the Villa Farnesina in Rome. The facades of the Peruzzi villas are full of elegant features and loggias which are found in villas such as Villa Cetinale near Siena, Villa Tattoli in Romola and Villa Gioiello in Pian de' Giullari in Florence. Villa La Suvera in Pievescola in Siena opens up even more to the surrounding space with its many loggias and arcades.

The idea of a majestic porch opening to the outside can also be inferred by observing the historical villas of Lucca. Villa Guinigi in Matraia and Villa Buonvisi in San Pancrazio both date back to the late sixteenth century and have large porches that allowed the gentlemen to admire the beautiful landscape from the inside to the surrounding countryside.
