The Tuscan aristocratic families began in the sixteenth century to beautify their residences in the countryside asking the major artists of the time to make the great halls and the rooms more comfortable and hospitable. Each room had to have something unique to show the culture of the owner and to surprise the guests.
By references to the symbolism of classical myths into the paintings to famous men and women representations, guests had to feel comfortable surrounded by the colors and images. They were supposed also to recognize in the works of art the intellectual virtues of the host family.

Among the painting with mythologycal themes we mention Villa Spedaletto in Volterra with Ghirlandaio who painted for Lorenzo the Magificent the myth of Vulcano, the Villa Spicchio in Lamporecchio with the Chariot of Sun frescoed on the vault of one of the rooms, the Villa in Castello with Botticelli who painted the Primavera in 1482 and the Birth of Venus, the Villa in Poggio a Caiano with Pontormo who frescoed the story of Vertummo and Pomona, preferring therefore pastoral life. In addition to mythological themes and allegories, some artists focused on the representation of the real mansions and palaces in the country, such as the famous lunettes by Giorgio Utens, or countryside environments and imaginary woodland, like those of Villa La Magia, Villa Corsini in Castello, Villa La Tana, Villa Corsini in Sesto Fiorentino. Not only the walls, the balconies and the porches, but also the ceilings becomes part of the wooded landscape with intertwining foliage paintings on them.

The Commedia dell'Arte masks depicted, for example, by Piero Salvestrini on the ceilings of Villa Il Pozzino in Castello in Florence and Gino Severini for Villa Montegufoni represent the importance given to the theater and leisure. The 'quadraturismo' is typical of the Sistine Chapel and the prospect had a large spread in Tuscany, as well as starting from the nineteenth century the use of wallpaper, introduced by the French fashion.
