Villa Monaciano in Siena
The Villa Monaciano is located in Ponte a Bozzone near Castelnuovo Berardenga in the province of Siena. The villa is now a working farm and offers a beautiful romantic garden with water games and statues.
The Villa Monaciano dates back to the eighteenth century and a drawing by Ettore Romagnoli in 1835 depicts the villa with a garden. But it was in the mid-nineteenth century that the villa was restored and enlarged in accordance with the typical trends and innovative architecture from Florence. Alessandro Pucci Sansedoni, the owner at the end of the nineteenth century, was a noble born in Siena who was resident in Florence. This is probably why the owner followed the Florentine architectural model rather than the one of Siena for the restoration of the villa.
The villa has three floors and on the front there are three entrance portals. The top floor, the main floor is highlighted by large windows and architectural decorations. Stone frames the arched windows on the main floor and two side windows.
The garden was built by the family of gardeners Pucci and the architect Giuseppe Poggi. The park is spread over three acres and is divided into two parts: an upper part and a lower part. The upper part is decorated with flowers while the lower part is the romantic garden with woods, trails, stone carvings and beautiful views. The garden is English and there are oak trees, palm trees, chestnut trees, oaks and a large cedar of Lebanon. Some are decorative elements of the twentieth century in an eclectic style combining the idea of leisure to collecting.
Although private, the villa and the park are open to the public paying a ticket between April and October.
