Villa Belcaro in Siena

Belcaro Villa is located near Siena. The family Turamini modified the original medieval castle in the villa for their stay. The coat of arms of the family Turamini is divided into two parts: on the left side there is a blue crescent on yellow background, while the right side there is a yellow star with six rays on a light blue background.

Villa Belcaro actually comes as a castle. In 1190 Marescotti built the castle which in later centuries was destroyed and rebuilt several times. At the end of the fourteenth century the castle became a convent as it had been donated to St Catherine of Siena. During the period in which the Salimbeni were the owners, the castle was destroyed. In the sixteenth century the new owners, the Turamini, decided to turn the castle into a large country house and farm to spend their leisure time and where they worked. In 1525 Crescenzio Turamini bought the property and began renovations.

Crescenzio Turamini called the architect Baldassare Peruzzi to renovate the castle. Today not much is left of the original design of the Peruzzi. At the Uffizi Museum, however, there is a drawing made by the same Peruzzi on how he wanted the Castle of Belcaro to be. The double courtyard, now connected by large arched doorways, is definitely an idea of the Peruzzi. Of the sixteenth century also the entrance wall of the garden with a central niche and the Church of Saints James and Christopher. In the niche there is the well. Gorgeous and dating from the same period also the frescoed loggia that was once the gateway to the secret garden.

The beautiful frescoes in the loggia of the secret garden date back to 1535. The artist was Giorgio di Giovanni. The Judgement of Paris is probably the most important work of the entire villa and is painted on the ceiling of the entrance hall of the villa.
