Villa Chigi in Cetinale in the Siena province

Villa Cetinale or Villa Chigi is located in Cetinale in the province of Siena. The villa belonged to the family Chigi Della Rovere. The coat of arms of the families Chigi Della Rovere is divided into four parts. In the first and fourth quadrant we find the coat of arms of the Della Rovere family: light blue background with a large gold tree with visible roots and branches. In the second and third quadrant we find the coat of arms of the Chigi family: red background and six peaks on a pyramidal shape with a gold star on top.

The construction of Villa Chigi begins in 1680. It was the Cardinal Flavio Chigi to start work, he decided to entrust the architect Carlo Fontana. Flavio Chigi was the grandson of Pope Alexander VII. The villa is very elegant and austere, both outside and inside. The cypresses characterize this building: a long driveway bordered by two rows of cypress trees connects the entrance to the property with the entrance of the villa. The southern facade is very reminiscent of Villa Le Volte with loggias. On the facade there are brick stone for both windows and arches.

The Roman architect Carlo Fontana is denoted in the construction of the flights of stairs in front of the facade. The obelisks and statues were carved by Bartolomeo Mazzuoli and decorate the long avenue of cypresses. Bartolomeo Mazzuoli also sculpted the bas-relief depicting Flavio Chigi while hosting at Villa Cetinale Cosimo III de' Medici. The relief is inside the villa.

The park has a strong mystical connotation. A flight of steps leads to the top of the property where there is a large cross with statues of saints. In the park there are also statues of animals and monsters carved by Mazzuoli and small chapels. We do not know the reason for this austere religious area. According to writer Joseph Forsyth, Cardinal Flavio Chigi Cetinale built it as a place of penance to atone for his sins. For others, however, the statues are just the icons of the districts of the Palio of Siena.
