Villa Sanmezzano in Florence

The Villa or Castle Sanmezzano is located in Rignano Arno and can be compared to an Alhambra in Tuscany. The villa Sanmezzano has family coat of arms Panciatichi Ximenes d'Aragona. The coat of arms is divided into two parts: on the right red with two gold columns and two crossed silver swords, the Ximenes family crest, and on the left the bottom in silver and the top in black with a silver ball with a red cross.

Villa Sanmezzano is also known as Castle Sanmezzano for his style and Moorish fortress. In 1605, the Ximenes bought the villa and in 1816 it passed to the Panciatichi in heritance. It was Panciatichi himself in 1853 to design the renovation of the villa. The White Hall was built in 1863. Among the Hall of Mirrors and the Smoking Room there is a gallery built in 1870. Many other rooms, including the picturesque Hall of Lovers, were built during the same period. The ceiling of the Sala dei Pavoni is characterized by the shapes and colors such as large tails of peacocks.

The bright colors, the maze-like paths, the mosaics and the columns create rooms that make the visitor dream. The neo-Moorish style leads the visitor out of Tuscany in faraway and fairytale lands. Each room has unique characteristics: from ceramics to embroidery in colored stucco of the ceiling of the Sala Bianca, from the balcony of the entrance hall to the colored columns of the Sala dei Gigli.

In 1889, the facade takes its present appearance with a central tower which is actually a door with a big arch and two small pagodas on either side. The castle is open to the public and in accordance with established schedules.
