The historic mansions of Siena are certainly of great beauty and value. Their reputation is the fact that, unlike what happened in Florence, the Sienese noble families were among the first to be opened right away to architectural innovations of the moment and to follow them. Peruzzi was an innovative architect and its villas represent the opening to the outside by the owners: the villa structures are not rectangular but made with a U-shape.The loggias and porticoes were used in the historical villas of Siena since the sixteenth century. The antagonism with Florence, that lasted until the conquest of Siena from Florence and also later, led the Sienese to make their houses even more beautiful and prestigious. The villas, in fact, accounted for almost a status symbol and showed the wealth and power of the family.

Among the villas in Siena that deserve to be named there are Villa Le Volte, the first great mansion built by Peruzzi for the Chigi family and maybe the first attempt of building the majestic Villa La Farnesina in Rome that Peruzzi built just a few yers later. From the 1500 also Villa La Suvera in Pievescola, Villa di Vicobello, Villa Celsi, Villa di Belcaro a Siena, Villa Pannocchieschi d'Elci.

In 1555, after centuries of battles, Florence conquered Siena. In the seventeenth and eighteenth century Sienese noble families continue to build villas and the formal influences are recognizable also in the most typical features of the palaces and villas in Rome rather than Florence. Many nobles, in fact, just to get away from the dominance of the Florentines, acquired estates going south or invested for their careers in Rome. The Chigi family is one example, and in 1680 the Cardinal Flavio Chigi built Villa Chigi in Cetinale helped by the Roman architect Carlo Fontana. In 1825 Villa Il Pavone was design by Agostino Fantastici for Mario Bianchi Bandinelli.
