is fundamentally an agricultural centre located in a fantastic position on a hill which dominates Val d’Elsa, Val d’Arbia and Val di Pesa
Near the centre there are 4 Etruscan catacombs which date back to the VII century B.C. and known as the tomb of Montecalvario.
The first documents about the city date back to 1220, when the Imperator Federico II converted it in a feud for the Guidi Counts. Then Florence used it as outpost against Siena but in 1397 the Milanese troupes conquered and destroyed it.
Some years after, it was totally rebuilt and surrounded by walls which were fundamental for the next attacks by the Pope’s troupes. Still today the centre has an aspect which remembers the XV century, represented by the fortress with its crenellated donjon. The Ugolini Palace, which dates back to the XVI century, and the cathedral, which has a fresco by the painter Lorenzo di Bicci must be visited.
