San Polo in Chianti is situated in the Rubbiana valley, in the north-eastern part of the Chianti region. The name of the valley derives from the robbia, a kind of grass used to dress leather and to dye wool.
Not far from San Polo in Chianti, the
pieve (parish church) San Miniato a Rubbiana which was consecrated in February 1077 and the church San Paolo a Ema, which probably gives the name to the village, are to be found. The Buondelmonti family built the latter around the 11th-12th century. Despite the great number of reworking the church has undergone, it has maintained its original structure. It houses interesting pictures by local artists.
Situated at the intersection of the road between Florence and the Arno valley with other minor roads, the village of San Polo in Chianti began to develop in the 15th century, when the rich Florentine families created the first big landed estates in this part of Tuscany.
At present the major economic activities are the cultivation of the Florentine iris and the production of the Chianti wine and of olive oil.
San Polo in Chianti is the ideal destination for those who want to relax in close contact with nature. Thanks to its strategic position, San Polo in Chianti is an excellent staring point for trips to important Tuscan cities, such as Florence, Siena and Arezzo, and for visiting less-known but nevertheless interesting centres, such as Greve in Chianti, San Casciano Val di Pesa, San Giovanni Valdarno and many others.
