Between Val di Chiana and Val d'Orcia, Montepulciano stands with its beautiful historic center on a hill from which it derives its name: 'monte' and 'Policiano' which in Latin has the meaning of rustic. Although it has Etruscan origins, the town was named in documents from 715 and was fortified at the beginning of the tenth century. The defensive walls were torn down several times due to repeated wars between Florence and Siena: the conquest of Montepulciano in fact meant controlling the Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana. In 1404 a treaty sanctioned the submission of the city to Florence, improved and restored palaces, churches and military buildings of the old town. The railway was built in 1844 and this has allowed, since that time, an easy connection with other cities in the area.
