Villa Bernardini was built in 1615. An engraving on a beam reminds the year in Roman numerals and the owner Bernardino Bernardini. The architect is unknown but probably belonged to the school of the famous Vincenzo Civitali. The Bernardini family was one of the most important and influential families in Lucca and the family coat of arms is red with two crossed white stripes and a black crescent in the center. The first representative of the Bernardini family to actively enter in politics was Giovanni Bernardini in 1378 and since then the family has always had representatives in the government. The Martinian law by Martino Bernardini was very important: since the seventeenth century it forbade citizens coming outside of Lucca to have political office in Lucca. Bernardino Bernardini was Ambassador of the Republic of Lucca and when he was not traveling loved to stay at Villa Bernardini.

Villa Bernardini has a rectangular shape and has two floors plus a large attic. Even today, the luxurious furnishings make the villa a real museum with a unique atmosphere. On the ground floor a large living room ideal for events and two smaller rooms, a men's smoking-room and a sitting room for women. On the first floor there are reception rooms with a hall decorated with two paintings by Borgognone. Unique bedroom in the Empire style with four-poster bed and antique furniture where Elisa Baiocchi, Napoleon's sister, slept.

The garden surrounding the villa extends for 8 hectares and it is divided into several parts, typical of the gardens in historic houses. The park has a romantic heart shape and is bordered by hedges. In the nineteenth century it was transformed from a French-style garden to a British-style garden. In the park there is also an open air theater with about 600 seats. The theater was built in the mid eighteenth century.
