The Cathedral of Santo Stefano in Prato became a cathedral in 1653; the building was erected using the green marble of Prato. In the past, in its place there was a church which dated back to the VI-VII centuries, which was rebuilt in the X century and extended many times by the city of Prato which became a Free Municipality in 1142.

Further extensions of the cathedral were also connected to the spread of a veneration for the Holy relic of “Sacra Cintola”. Today the cathedral of Prato is one of the most peculiar Romanic-Gothic cathedrals.
