Pisa was already an important city during the Etruscan period, confirming its importance in Roman times. In the Middle Ages Pisa reached its splendor economically and politically. This led to an artistic blossoming in the city, still admirable in its main squares and monuments. Thanks to its port and the river Arno, Pisa became one of the four Italian Maritime Republics conquering and trading with the other great port cities of the Mediterranean.
