Etruscan origins: in fact, you can still see there part of the Etruscan walls that date back to the seventh century BC. In 805 Pope Leone III and Carlo Magno gave the city to the Abbey of the Three Fountains who owned it until the thirteenth century when the city became a stronghold of the family Aldobrandeschi. In the fourteenth century it passed to the Orsini of Pitigliano. In 1414 the Sienese conquered the city and rebuilt the defensive walls.
