Monte Argentario is a town in the province of Grosseto. Its history is inextricably linked to the peculiarities of the territory:
Monte Argentario in fact was once an island. Then over the centuries formed mounds of sand that created the territory where today was built the city of Orbetello and the beaches of the Giannella and Feniglia. During the Middle Ages the city was one of the possessions entrusted to the Abbey of the Three Fountains. After the Aldobrandeschi family and the Orsini family, Monte Argentario became a territory of Siena and the Sienese government decided to
fortify the city. After the victory of the Spaniards and Florence against Siena in 1555, Monte Argentario in 1557 became part of the State dei Presidi and were built
towers and walls. In 1646 the French fleet was able to defeat the Spanish fleet in the sea and conquer the city. The wars between the two powers continued for centuries until in 1843 Monte Argentario became an independent municipality and in 1861 became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
